When Larry Kramer (playwright, author, film producer, public health advocate, and activist) died he was working on a play about Covid and AIDS called “An Army of Lovers Must Not Die,” after the Gay Liberation chant “An army of lovers cannot fail!” I had also been thinking about the beginning of Covid and the beginning of AIDS, and so I wondered what his unfinished manuscript would say. What would his response be to the present moment, with still more death and still more hate? This video sources audio from his keynote address for 1991 Pride in New York City that I have re-edited, captioned, and added to original video footage.
